JAPAN, February 2009

Steller's Sea Eagles, White-tailed Eagles, Japanese Cranes, Whooper Swans, and of course the iconic Japanese Snow Monkeys are species that you will have a chance to photograph on this 11 day tour of Japan.

The trip begins when we meet in the town of Narita, Japan which is North of Tokyo and the location of the main airport in Japan. It is a charming town that is home to the largest Buddhist Shrine in Japan, and to a great shopping area full of picturesque native shops.

From Narita we will travel to photograph the Japanese Snow Monkeys in their warm mountain pool. The trip to the Snow Monkeys does involve a walk of roughly 3/4 of a mile on a snowy uphill path.

The trip then goes to the Northern Island of Hokkaido where there will be opportunities to photograph the rare (second most endangered Crane in the world) Japanese or Red-crowned Crane. We will also travel to a volcanically warmed lake to see and photograph the Whooper Swans up close and personal. The Steller's Sea Eagles, White-tailed Eagles, and Black-eared Kites winter in this area and, depending on weather and pack ice conditions, we will have as many as three days on the pack ice to photograph these beautiful and rare birds. The pack ice is in this area during a very narrow time period during the latter half of February and the early part of March.

Also not included is trip cancellation insurance and medical insurance, both of which you can purchase from independent venders.

NEWFOUNDLAND, July, 2009

The 7 day tour will begin in St. John's , Newfoundland with a boat trip to photograph whales, Puffins, Murres and other sea birds up close and in their natural habitat.

We will then proceed down the coast to photograph the always beautiful and impressive Northern Gannets. The colony has 38,000 nesting Northern Gannets, and is really exciting to see and photograph. In and around the Gannet colony there are also Murres, Razorbills and a very large nesting colony of Black-legged Kittywakes on the cliffs. Along the way we will stop at a beach where breaching whales and Gannets frequently come in close enough to be easily seen and photographed.

Ii is then on to the Puffin Colony on the Northern area of the Bona Vista Peninsula for both static and flight shots. The drive is through many small charming Newfoundland fishing villages. There may even be a few of the icebergs of spring left around some of the harbors, but they have been disappearing earlier and earlier each year.

The bird and wildlife of Newfoundland is quite special, and more accessible than in other areas of the western hemisphere, but it is the people of Newfoundland that are really special. They are friendly, helpful and truly pleasant. The tour will be conducted with the same philosophy. It will be low key, friendly and helpful. There will be all of the help and advice that you might want or need provided unobtrusively and willingly.

CHURCHILL, MANITOBA , June 2009

Churchill is most famous for its Polar Bears in the fall, but it is also one of the premier birding and bird photography places in the world. On my first trip I naively asked if I would find birds in breeding plumage, and was patiently told that, yes, I would, since that was the only reason they had for coming here. There is such a nice concentration of species that come to this area alongside Hudson Bay to breed that it is difficult to list them all. However it might include an Arctic Tern dive bombing your head or the much sought after Ross's Gull.. They are very accessible, although there are times and places that it might involve a bit of walking or getting a little muddy. I had always wondered what Tundra looked like and discovered it must be a word for "a swamp that is frozen for most of the year". For further information click here: CHURCHILL INFO
